What is Cadet Firearms Training?

The Cadet Firearms Training program teaches responsible firearms handling skills following the National Rifle Association curriculum. It includes classroom and range sessions covering topics such as firearm safety rules, handling techniques, firearm operation, and marksmanship fundamentals. Successful completion provides cadets with a strong foundation in firearms handling skills. Both cadets and their parents are responsible for maintaining and improving these skills.

Civil Air Patrol oversees firearms training, ensuring safety through certified instructors and a thorough review process for shooting activities. Members involved in training receive specialized instruction, with adult instructors certified by the NRA. The 102nd Composite Squadron partners with the Smithfield Sportsman's Club to train cadets, who undergo classroom and dry-fire instruction before live-fire training.

Why Train with Firearms?

Civil Air Patrol acknowledges the significance of firearms training for cadets, considering the prevalence of private firearms ownership in the US. The program prioritizes safe handling practices, promoting responsible citizenship. Advanced firearms proficiencies are essential for cadets aspiring to careers in the military, law enforcement, or outdoor fields, with marksmanship classes facilitating faster progression in these fields. Additionally, even for cadets uninterested in firearms, the training program instills personal discipline, concentration, and responsibility.

What Firearms are used in the Training?

Cadets will use bolt-action training rifles provided by the Smithfield Sportsman's Club and ammunition donated by the club. The rifles are chambered for the .22 LR cartridge. It's important to note that the squadron follows CAP regulations and does not own or store any firearms or ammunition.
